IntroductionThis guide provides brief descriptions and contact information for some of the sex-positive cultural resources of Vancouver, British Columbia. Before beginning, we should pause to mention that:
This guide was last updated on April 15, 2005, and is in part based on a real-life visit to Vancouver BC over January 23-24, 2004. Area codes are 604 unless noted otherwise.
BDSM/LeatherFor most folks, BIO is the best place to start: they offer a wide range of educational and social events, including an annual convention, for folks of all genders and orientations. Men who enjoy men-only events may wish to also check out VASM or VML while women who enjoy women-only events may wish to also check out Vancouver Women in Leather and Raven. In addition to the above, Rascal's Club hosts monthly play parties and workshops for folks of all genders and orientations, and Studio Q hosts periodic Queer-only play parties (i.e. for anyone who doesn't identify as straight). Vancouver's leather bar is the Pumpjack (1167 Davie Street / 685-3417). Community charity events include the annual Mr. Jock and Mr. Denim/Leather contests sponsored by the Knights of Malta as well as the annual Mr. BC Leather Competition. A variety of the events hosted as part of Western Canada Leather Pride Week are also of a charitable nature (the WCLP titleholders page provides more specifics on individual titleholder fundraisers). Personalized instruction in BDSM technique is offered by A New Perspective Workshops and Seminars. To stay informed of everything that's going on, the best course of action is to subscribe to the moderated Vancouver Leather Events List, but if you prefer not to subscribe to mailing lists you could just read the current month's BIO newsletter through their web site (which also lists select local events that might be good for beginners, such as the Vancouver munches). Generally, as new groups form they'll be linked to from the Vancouver Leather Groups Page.
Swing ClubsThe two best-known clubs are Paradise Chalet (on-premise) and Couples Choice (off-premise). A club called Confidentially Yours also advertises house parties. The vancouver3somes group sponsors well-attended off-premise events at a club called Connections, and every once in a while hosts an informal party of their own.
PolyamouryThe Vancouver Polyamoury Group organizes monthly discussion groups and yearly poly retreats, but perhaps most importantly offers the Vanpoly Mailing List: the primary means by which poly community events in the Vancouver area are publicized.
Nudist/NaturistTwo landed clubs are Van Tan and Sunny Trails, while nude swims are sponsored by NIFTY and Skinnydipper. The best-known nude beach is Wreck Beach, though others are listed on the COBC site. Please note that none of these clubs or locations are sexual in nature: rather, they're listed here because nude recreation is a popular way to learn to accept your body.
Men's Bathhouses and Sex ClubsM2M is Vancouver's newest space, and has a leather/levi feel. F212 tends to attract a gym-buffed crowd, and also offers exercise equipment. A cautionary, though hopefully obvious, reminder may be in order here: you cannot tell whether somebody is HIV-positive or HIV-negative based on how they look, or based on anything they say. Safer sex is always important, though perhaps here any sane person would consider it essential.
Spiritually-Focused SexualityThe Body Electric School offers their men's workshop twice a year in Vancouver, while Maryse Côte offers one-day workshops for both men and women. Men who want to enjoy feelings of intimacy with other men (not necessarily sexual intimacy) may also want to check out Men in Touch. Another option is BodyVox Seminars.
Sex EducationThe leading organization hosting adult educational events in Vancouver (on topics ranging from erotic photography to rope bondage) is Libido Events. A comfortable art gallery and sex toy store called The Art of Loving also sponsors educational events.
Sex ToysWomyn's Ware is an extremely comfortable place to shop, and offers the best selection of sex toys in the city. They also offer online classes and seminars, and have a combination sex toy guide / catalog which is well worth picking up. In general, don't visit Vancouver BC without dropping by this store: it's wonderful! Note that the range of sex education videotapes available for purchase or rental in Vancouver is smaller than that at equivalent stores in the United States: this is not the fault of Vancouver's stores, rather of the need for explicit tapes to pass through a formal governmental review process which may not be financially feasible for niche erotica or educational material.
Fetish Fashion and DancingThe Body Perve Social Club and Sin City both offer monthly fetish nights (the latter also offers a dungeon and play area at their events). Both have a strict dress code. An annual event for rubber clothing enthusiasts is Rubbout. For fetish fashion clothing: Mack's Leathers (1043 Granville Street / 688-6225) specializes in leather, Mor Rubber (1263 Homer / 683-2667) specializes in rubber, and Judy Basha Designs specializes in PVC, and Hypatia Shoes specializes in fetish shoes. Mail-order fashion shops in the area include Flaming Angels.
LGBT ResourcesGeneralThe LGBT Community Centre offers a wide range of support groups, educational events, and other resources, including an information and referral line. Vancouver Pride Society organizes the Pride March every June, and the bi-weekly newspaper Xtra West does a solid job with community news and event listings. For GLBT-focused books, visit the famous Little Sisters Book Store (click on the "Customer Care" link for directions and hours).
BiBiNet BC maintains resource and event listings, currently including the Options Social Group, the Bi Support Group, BiVancouver, and an annual event called BiCamp.
Gay or Bi MenIn addition to the other resources mentioned in this guide, Vancouver has a particularly active organization for bears and their admirers along with a similar organization for bear/cub men under 35, as well as a circle of the radical faeries and a mailing list for local rubbermen. The Pacific-Canadian Association of Nudists sponsors social events and dances specifically for gay and bi men, while the Shadow Falls campground (host camp of the annual EmoMen event) offers a more rustic clothing optional environment.
Lesbian or Bi WomenIn addition to the other resources mentioned in this guide, one destination event is Diva's Den, "a strip show by women for women only" which is held once a year at the Penthouse Night Club (and publicized along with many other lesbian community events on the Vancouver SuperDyke web site). See also the events listings of Fly Girl Productions, which specializes in hosting club events of interest to the lesbian community.
TransgenderLocal resource guides and support are provided by TransAlliance Society and GenderFuct.
CrossdressingHeterosexual crossdressers are served by the Cornbury Society. A certified makeup artist named Tora Roberts also offers her services to the community.
Dance ClubsRight now, Sonar has the hottest reputation in the straight scene and Odyssey has the hottest reputation in the gay scene. See straight.com and gayvancouver.net for current club listings.
Local Sex-Positive MediaThe University of British Columbia radio station CITR @ 101.9FM currently hosts the QueerFM and Juicebox weekly radio shows (a related show being Primal). The former offers in-depth coverage of Vancouver LGBT issues and events, while the latter offers in-depth coverage of Vancouver sex-positive culture (e.g. events, interviews, issues, commentary). Vancouver's Gay and Lesbian community television show is Out on TV.
Health and CounselingSTDResource.com lists STD testing locations. The Kink-Aware Professionals Canada Guide lists several kink-aware counselors, and the city's sex therapists include Dr. Pega Ren, David McKenzie, and Dr. Bianca Rucker.
PoliticsVancouver is home to what may be the world's first sex-positive political party: The Sex Party.
BookstoresIn addition to Vancouver's well-known GLBT Bookstore, other booksellers who offer non-mainstream or otherwise challenging fare include Spartacus and the BCMP Bookstore. For more mainstream titles, the local favorite seems to be Chapters for books. Bibliophiles should also note that Vancouver's central public library is world-class, and occupies a full city block.
Arts, Food, and GiftsThe Vancouver Aquarium is one of the largest in North America (the Beluga Whale and the Moon Jellyfish exhibits are particularly nice). The Vancouver Sun will contain comprehensive arts listings, but if you enjoy improv theatre then the 10pm Friday and Saturday Vancouver TheatreSports League performances would be well worth your time. The best of Vancouver's all-you-can-eat sushi lunch spots is currently Tanpopo (1122 Denman St upstairs; 681-7777; 11:30am-3pm). A good place to pick up gifts for friends back home is Lush.
Traveling to VancouverIf you can, print out the free Little Sisters Vancouver Map before leaving home. If you're a United States citizen traveling to Vancouver, you should have EITHER your passport OR your driver's license + birth certificate with you when you go. In Washington State, if you're traveling north from Seattle (or better yet from Edmonds, Everett, or Bellingham) without a car, then your most economical and probably most convenient choice is ground transportation via Amtrak Cascades. If you plan to visit any bars and look under the age of 35, then you'll want to bring two pieces of ID (your driver's license and something else that at a minimum contains your name and is signed by you). Once you get to Vancouver you may find you can navigate the city on foot, although the city does have a very good bus system. However, if you're staying out late you may wish to have a few taxi numbers with you in case you're still out when the busses stop running: Black Top 800-494-1111, Vancouver Taxi 888-871-8294, and Yellow Cab 800-898-8294. The most economical way to stay in Vancouver is in one of that city's excellent hostels. Basically, if you're mainly interested in sunning yourself on Wreck Beach or attending a conference at University of British Columbia, then HI-Jericho Beach is where you want to stay: otherwise, stay in Hi-Vancouver Central, or HI Vancouver Downtown if the former is full. Note that non-residents of Canada can apply for a refund of taxes paid while visiting Vancouver, for accommodations and goods that you'll be taking out of Canada, but the minimum amounts are such that you're unlikely to reach them if staying at a hostel. But definitely keep your receipts if you buy anything expensive, or stay at an expensive hotel. You can typically exchange foreign currency for Canadian currency at one of the Canadian chartered banks, but Custom House Currency Exchange, Calforex, and Thomas Cook Foreign Exchange are other options. Note that it's customary to tip 15% in restaurants and for taxis: in restaurants you can typically double the GST and round up. Vancouver has 10-digit dialing, so even if you were calling your next-door neighbor within the same area code you'd still need to include the area code when dialing. In all other respects you make calls the same way you would in the United States, since the country code is the same. As is also the case in the United States, dial 911 in case of emergency.
Making a Side-Trip to VictoriaBritish Columbia's capital city of Victoria is located on Vancouver Island, accessible by ferry from Vancouver. In addition to being interesting for its uniquely English character, Victoria is also an opportunity to see a session of Parliament. Note that area codes are 250 for anything in Victoria. The main poly resource in Victoria is the vanisle_poly list, while Sagacity hosts BDSM/fetish social and educational events. In Nanaimo, there's KIN Dungeon.
